As the 2nd Annual Supporters’ Charity Shield kicked off on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at RFK, the players of Barra Brava FC and Screaming Eagles FC could feel proud of being a part of a truly special charitable event unlike any other in the country.
As players arrived at the field to prepare for the matches, we were all pleasantly surprised to see a handful of DC United superstars present and eager to support the event. Jaime Moreno, Juan Manuel Peña, Troy Perkins, Rodney Wallace, Kurt Morsink, Andrew Quinn, and Conor Shanosky all took time out of their busy schedule to sign autographs and meet their fans and the BBFC and SEFC players. I think that says a lot about DC United and the supporters’ culture surrounding this great team. Even in tough times, these United stars won’t forget the fans backing them week after week just as we will always be supporting them win or lose.
Admittedly, the charitable spirit of the day’s two matches made for a different game day feel, but as any competitive player will tell you, once the boots go on and the game begins the only thought is on performing to the best of your ability and coming away with a win for your team. The lovely ladies of Barra Brava FC made this fact abundantly clear to all spectators during Game 1 as they wasted no time at all in scoring their first of seven goals less than a minute after the opening whistle. Overall, the ladies looked comfortable and well organized and the 7-1 win for BBFC was a well earned result.
In the final match of the event, the men of Barra Brava FC took on Screaming Eagles FC in a highly competitive rematch of their 3-3 draw during league play in the spring. Featuring a handful of new players and missing a few regulars, we got off to a shaky start but eventually settled down and were awarded for flashes of brilliance with two great goals from defender David Brodian and midfielder Oscar Feliu during the second half. And an honorable mention is deserved for BBFC alumnus and Purple Heart recipient Jose Torres, who was able to lace up the boots for old time sake, take the field for BBFC, and help them team to a 2-0 win and a second consecutive Supporters’ Charity Shield.
There is a lot of credit to go around for putting on this event and we would like to thank a handful of people that helped make all of this possible.
Thank you Aprile Pritchet of United for DC and DC United Executive VP Stephen Zack who provided us with a venue for the event and helped to publicize it.
Thank you to the management and the players of Screaming Eagles FC…it’s always a tough game when we meet and we look forward to the next time whether it is on the pitch or in the stands at RFK.
Thank you to RE/MAX GENESIS of Fairfax for donating food and drinks for the grills and thank you to Barra Brava’s Hell’s Kitchen for preparing it for all the spectators.
Again, thank you to Jaime Moreno, Juan Manuel Peña, Troy Perkins, Rodney Wallace, Kurt Morsink, Andrew Quinn, and Conor Shanosky of DC United for your support. If you have any friends or former teammates looking for a team to play for, I think I know of a club that would like to have them.
I know this is out of character but I have to do it. Thanks to the refs for donating their time in support of the charities. Scream it with me now, “Thank! You! Ref!! Thank! You! Ref!!”
And finally thank you to all the friends and family that came out for the 2nd Annual Supporters’ Charity Shield. To have the resources to put on a event like this is something that we think separates us from typical amateur clubs, and we are grateful for your support and your generous donations!
